The Sovereignty of Our Great God

What is Sovereignty? Webster defines Sovereignty as supreme power; supremacy; the position of the higher power. To say that God is sovereign is to proclaim that God possesses supreme dominion and ultimate authority over all things.

Another term in Christianity to describe God governing everything that happens in His creation is called “providence”. Wayne Grudem defines providence as God continually involved with all created things in such a way that He (1) keeps them existing and maintaining the properties with which He created them; (2) cooperates with created things in every action, directing their distinctive properties to cause them to act as they do; and (3) directs them to fulfill His purposes (Systematic Theology, pg. 315).

Acts 17:28 “for in Him we live and move and exist…”

Ephesians 1:11 “also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will”

Isaiah 46:9-10 “(9) “Remember the former things long past, For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me, (10) Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things which have not been done, Saying, ‘My purpose will be established, And I will accomplish all My good pleasure’”

Scripture declares that God is sovereign…

Deuteronomy 8:18 “… for it is he who gives you power to get wealth”

1 Chronicles 29:11 “Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all.”

Psalm 115:3 “Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases.”

Psalm 135:6 “Whatever the LORD pleases, he does, in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all deeps.”

Proverbs 16:4 “The LORD has made everything for its purpose, even the wicked for the day of trouble.”

Revelation 4:11 “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”

How sovereign is God?

God is sovereign over matter and weather…
Amos 4:7-10 “(7) “I also withheld the rain from you when there were yet three months to the harvest; I would send rain on one city, and send no rain on another city; one field would have rain, and the field on which it did not rain would wither; (8) so two or three cities would wander to another city to drink water, and would not be satisfied; yet you did not return to me,” declares the LORD. (9)”I struck you with blight and mildew; your many gardens and your vineyards, your fig trees and your olive trees the locust devoured; yet you did not return to me,” declares the LORD. (10) “I sent among you a pestilence after the manner of Egypt; I killed your young men with the sword, and carried away your horses, and I made the stench of your camp go up into your nostrils; yet you did not return to me,” declares the LORD.”

God is sovereign over animals…
Genesis 6:19-20 “(19) And of every living thing of all flesh, you shall bring two of every sort into the ark to keep them alive with you. They shall be male and female. (20) Of the birds according to their kinds, and of the animals according to their kinds, of every creeping thing of the ground, according to its kind, two of every sort shall come in to you to keep them alive.”

God is sovereign over angels/demons…
Judges 9:23 “And God sent an evil spirit between Abimelech and the leaders of Shechem, and the leaders of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech,”

Mark 1:27 “And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.””

God is sovereign over evil…
Genesis 50:20 “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.”

God is sovereign over man…
Deuteronomy 2:30 “But Sihon the king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him, for the LORD your God hardened his spirit and made his heart obstinate, that he might give him into your hand, as he is this day.”

Psalm 105:25 “He turned their hearts to hate his people, to deal craftily with his servants”

Proverbs 16:1 “The plans of the heart belong to man, but the answer of the tongue is from the LORD.”

Philippians 2:13 “for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.”

God is sovereign over salvation…
John 1:13 “who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.”

Acts 13:48 “And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord, and as many as were appointed to eternal life believed.”

2 Thessalonians 2:13 “But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.”

Romans 9:15-16 “(15) For he says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” (16) So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.”

Too many make the Almighty look cruel. This is not the case. God does not rule as a cruel ogre. The sovereignty of God should make us feel very small, and God very great. Because God, who is wise and good, providentially rules over the affairs of life, both good and evil, as Christians our hearts should be filled with awe and joy and hope and comfort.

God is never surprised about any situation in my life. Everything, everything, in my life is under His control. The entirety of my life, every single situation good or bad, is moving toward His good plan. I can face today and the future only because I know that the sovereign God of the universe loves me, and is for me. By His grace He has saved me, and He knows all the details of my life which are all, every one of them, moving toward my good and His glory!

In Him,
Miles
